Inspiring the Next Generation: NHRA YES Program Day at Mission Raceway Park
On June 13, 2025, Mission Raceway Park roared with more than just the sound of high-powered engines—it buzzed with excitement, curiosity, and the energy of over 200 students and educators participating in the NHRA Youth and Education Services (YES) Program Day.
The NHRA YES Program is designed to ignite interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through the exhilarating world of drag racing—and this year’s event was a milestone moment. Leading up to the big day, students from local schools engaged in STEM-focused lessons that connected classroom learning to the real-world mechanics and physics of motorsports. From the fundamentals of aerodynamics to the chemistry behind fuel combustion, these lessons brought textbook topics to life in a way that was both fun and meaningful. Students entering the NHRA YES Day program at Mission Raceway This pilot year was made possible through a strong partnership with Mission Public Schools. Their educators played a vital role in adapting and rewriting the YES Program lesson plans to align with British Columbia's Curriculum Standards. Their support didn’t stop there—they also helped bring out middle school students, ensuring a wide range of youth could participate in this unique learning experience.

Then came the big day: a full field study experience at Mission Raceway Park.

Under sunny skies and the backdrop of a historic racing venue, students stepped into the heart of drag racing. The event featured a dynamic career fair with local colleges, universities, and industry representatives, giving students a chance to explore pathways in automotive technology, engineering, science, and skilled trades. Students learning about the UBC Solar Department Teacher and students trying out the practice tree. One of the major highlights of the day was a surprise visit from none other than NHRA announcer and racing legend Alan Reinhart. Students were thrilled to meet him, hear his stories, and learn how his career has spanned the intersection of racing, science, and communication. His presence left a lasting impression on both youth and educators alike.
Alan Renihart announcing the prize draw winners attendees also had the chance to ask questions, explore hands-on displays, and see how their classroom learning connects directly to real-world careers. Whether speaking with a university engineering rep, talking with a professional stunt car driver or watching a race team prep a dragster, students experienced firsthand how STEM education can fuel their passions and drive their futures. The NHRA YES Program Day at Mission Raceway Park was more than an event—it was a community-driven celebration of learning, exploration, and inspiration. We’re proud of what was accomplished in this pilot year and deeply grateful to the Mission school district and all our partners for making it possible.
We look forward to growing this initiative and seeing where these young minds race off to next! Smoke Fire & Thunder Link and Promotion
